An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal bulge or swelling in the wall of the aorta—the largest blood vessel in your body. If left undetected and untreated, an aortic aneurysm can grow, weaken, and eventually rupture, leading to life-threatening internal bleeding.
Our team follows the latest guidelines in recommending aortic aneurysm screening for patients who are at higher risk, such as men over the age of 65 and individuals who have a history of smoking. The screening is typically performed using a simple, noninvasive abdominal ultrasound, which allows us to safely and painlessly check for any enlargement of the aorta.
Early detection through screening services gives you and your healthcare provider the best chance to manage an aneurysm before it causes symptoms or complications. If an aneurysm is found, we will work with you to monitor its size and determine the most appropriate treatment—whether that involves regular check-ups, lifestyle changes, medication, or referral for surgical evaluation if needed.
Aortic aneurysm screening is an important preventative measure for patients who may be at increased risk of developing this condition.
Who Should Be Screened?
Men aged 65 to 75 who have ever smoked: National guidelines recommend a one-time abdominal ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) for men in this group. Research shows that early detection in these patients can be lifesaving.
Men aged 65 to 75 who have never smoked but have a family history: If you have a first-degree relative (such as a parent or sibling) who has had an aortic aneurysm, screening may also be appropriate even if you have never smoked.
Women aged 65 to 75: While the risk for women is generally lower, screening may be considered if you have ever smoked or have a family history of AAA. Our providers can help you weigh the risks and benefits and decide if screening is right for you.
Other Risk Factors
If you have a history of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high blood pressure, or certain genetic conditions like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, you may also be at increased risk.
Individualized Care
Routine screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm isn’t necessary for everyone. For example, women who have never smoked and have no family history of aneurysm are typically at low risk. Screening decisions should always be personalized.
Screening for aortic aneurysms is typically recommended for individuals at higher risk, particularly those with a family history or certain medical conditions. The screening generally involves an ultrasound or CT scan to detect aneurysms before they cause symptoms, as these can develop silently.
For men aged 65 to 75 who have ever smoked, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a one-time screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This group is at the highest risk due to the increased likelihood of aneurysm formation from smoking. If an aneurysm is detected early, it can be monitored or treated before it ruptures, which can be life-threatening.
Those with a family history of aortic aneurysms or who have conditions like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which affect connective tissue, may need earlier or more frequent screenings. Additionally, individuals with high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, or a history of heart disease may also be at higher risk and could benefit from screening.
While routine screening for the general population is not typically recommended, people at increased risk should discuss screening with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate approach based on their individual risk factors and medical history.
An aortic aneurysm is often referred to as a “silent threat” because it can develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms. Many individuals may not realize they have an aortic aneurysm until it becomes large or ruptures—a situation that can be life-threatening.
Recognizing the Signs
While most aortic aneurysms are symptom-free until complications arise, there are warning signs to be aware of:
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: You might feel a deep, constant pain in your abdomen or the side of your abdomen, back pain, or even a pulsating sensation near your navel. If the aneurysm ruptures, symptoms can escalate quickly to severe abdominal or back pain, low blood pressure, rapid pulse, loss of consciousness, and shock. These symptoms require immediate medical attention—call 911 or seek emergency care right away.
Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm: This type can cause chest or back pain, shortness of breath, coughing, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms occur when the aneurysm presses on nearby organs or tissues. Sudden and severe chest or back pain can signal a rupture or dissection, which is a medical emergency.
Who Is at Risk?
Routine checkups and screening are crucial for people who are at higher risk, including those with:
• A family history of aortic aneurysms
• High blood pressure
• Certain genetic conditions
